John Elberty
Captain
As a member of Sheriff Mike Wilson’s staff, Captain Elberty brings 39 years of Military and Law Enforcement experience to the Trumbull County Sheriff Office and will oversee the Drug Task Force / TAG Unit.
In 1986, Captain Elberty enlisted in the Ohio Army National Guard Military Police Corp, serving for 20 years in the 838th MP Company headquartered in Austintown, OH; retiring in 2006 as a Master Sergeant. During this enlistment, Captain Elberty deployed to the Middle East for Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm; to Europe for Operation Joint Endeavor to support the NATO Bosnian mission; and after 9-11-2001, in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
In 1991, Captain Elberty joined the Youngstown Police Department, retiring in 2025 as a Detective / Sergeant with 33 years of service. During much of his service, Captain Elberty was assigned to the Cleveland Division, Youngstown Resident Agency, FBI Violent Crimes Task Force / Gang Unit. Duties included the apprehension of violent offenders, violent street gang investigations, and domestic / international terrorism investigations.
In 1994, Captain Elberty became a SWAT Operator on the Youngstown Police Department Tactical Response Team, spending 15 years as the Commander of the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team (MVCRT) SWAT, completing his service in 2025.
Captain Elberty is a graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science, FBI National Academy Class 241, Critical Incident Response, Leadership, and Tactical courses. He currently is an Instructor in Leadership and Tactics with the Ohio Tactical Officers Association and the Ohio Police Officers Training Academy.
